Canada has recently announced the process of taking applications for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) 2022.
Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will issue invitations to apply over the next two weeks to 23,100 interested potential sponsors. IRCC has stated that this figure is sufficient to achieve its target of accepting up to 15,000 complete applications for sponsorship under PGP 2022. Invitations start at the end of this week.
IRCC will be attracted by those who expressed interest in sponsoring their parents and grandparents in autumn 2020. The IRCC says there are about 155,000 potential sponsors remaining in the pool. Eligibility for PGP
You are eligible to sponsor your parents and grandparents if:
- You completed the Interest in Sponsor form on the IRCC website between October 13, 2020 at 12PM ET and November 3, 2020 at 12PM ET
- you are at least 18 years old
- do you live in canada
- You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
- You have enough money to support the people you want to sponsor (by demonstrating that you meet the minimum required income)
Minimum Required Income (MNI) is a major eligibility factor for PGP. This proof of income required is to be provided only after expressing interest in the sponsorship through the online form. However, applicants selected and invited to apply and who do not meet the minimum required income requirement, their applications will be rejected.

Due to the loss of income that many have experienced during the coronavirus pandemic, the IRCC is reducing its MNI threshold by a modest 30 per cent for both the calendar years 2021 and 2020. In addition, the IRCC is allowing regular employment insurance benefits and temporary COVID-19 benefits (such as Canada Emergency Response benefits) to be included in the sponsor’s income.
Sponsors living in Quebec
Canadians who wish to sponsor a parent or grandparent and who live in Quebec have their income assessed by Quebec’s Ministry of Immigration based on the province’s income requirements.
Both the IRCC and the Government of Quebec require a signed undertaking from the interested sponsors. This undertaking determines how long Sponsors will be financially responsible for family members from the time they become permanent residents of Canada.
The term of undertaking for parents and grandparents is 20 years for residents of all Canadian provinces except Quebec. For residents of Quebec, the term of that commitment is 10 years.
